March 5- Day 137- Sharks live in the Wild, not pools
For the second day in a row, somebody else has had to take the Game of the Day duties, since Connor Keith is out of town. Here goes nothing.

Sundays are perfect for sitting and watching hockey all day and if you don’t have anything to do from mid-afternoon through the rest of the night, then today’s schedule is just for you.

Sunday’s action begins in Calgary, Alberta as the New York Islanders pay their annual visit to the Calgary Flames at 4 p.m. Buffalo at Pittsburgh (NHLN/ROOT/MSG-B) kicks off at 5 p.m. As things get underway at PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh, newly acquired defenseman Kyle Quincey and the Columbus Blue Jackets face off against now former Blue Jacket defenseman Dalton Prout and the New Jersey Devils in New Jersey.

An hour later the Pacific Division leading San Jose Sharks visit the 2nd place in the Central Division Minnesota Wild. At 8 p.m. the Vancouver Canucks face former teammate Ryan Kesler and the Anaheim Ducks in southern California as the St. Louis Blues square off against the Colorado Avalanche at Pepsi Center on NBCSN.

Half an hour later, the evening’s final game kicks off in Glendale, Arizona with the Carolina Hurricanes and the Arizona Coyotes. All times eastern.

Short list:
- Buffalo at Pittsburgh: In a rematch of the 2008 Winter Classic, the Sabres and head coach Dan Bylsma pay a visit to Bylsma’s former club as Buffalo looks to climb from being five points out of a wild card spot in the Atlantic Division.
- Columbus at New Jersey: Kyle Quincey and Dalton Prout were traded for each other, so which team made the better move? Obviously we’ll find out after whoever wins this game.
- San Jose at Minnesota: Two division leaders in the Western Conference do battle as the Wild look to compete with the Washington Capitals in this season’s President’s Trophy race. Okay, fine, Minnesota was on top of the Central Division until last night.
- St. Louis at Colorado: Some professional team from St. Louis is playing some bantam team from Colorado (only kidding). Honestly, I’m just throwing this one on here in case your team’s not playing tonight and you want to watch out of market hockey on NBCSN.
Since I was informed I would be writing today’s Game of the Day matchup preview, the Minnesota Wild were on top of the Central Division as the San Jose Sharks continued to dominate the Pacific Division and everything seemed to be perfectly aligning for my Daily Matchup debut– that is until the Chicago Blackhawks decided to ruin the fun, surpassing the Wild for 1st in the Central Division with their 5-3 victory over the Nashville Predators Saturday night.

However! First place is still on the line for both teams in the San Jose Sharks at Minnesota Wild matchup (technically). Minnesota can reclaim the Central Division lead with a win at home and San Jose can do everything to keep the Wild out of first place in the Central while putting more separation between themselves and the Edmonton Oilers for first in the Pacific Division.

The Sharks enter Xcel Energy Center on a three game winning streak with a 38-18-7 record through 63 games played (good enough for 83 points on the year), as the Wild enter Sunday night coming off of a 1-0 loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets and a 41-15-6 record after 62 games played and 88 points on the season.

Despite losing in the Stanley Cup Final last year, San Jose is still a hot team on a run, similar to how the Tampa Bay Lightning seemed to shrug off their 2015 Stanley Cup Final loss to the Blackhawks. The Sharks aren’t in the hunt for the President’s Trophy– but the Wild are, more on that in a second– yet they’re quietly peaking at the right time.

Though quietly might not be the right term.

Winners of four out of their last five games, in which they’ve outscored their opponents 15-6 in that span, San Jose is witnessing quite the team effort in the midst of a Hart Trophy worthy season from defenseman Brent Burns (27-40-67 totals in 63 games). Only Sharks captain Joe Pavelski ranks in the top-50 in scoring in the NHL tied for 21st in the league with 55 points alongside Auston Matthews (TOR), Alex Ovechkin (WSH), Leon Draisaitl (EDM) and Victor Hedman (TB).

Despite trailing off in goals this season, Joe Thornton’s 35 assists contribute to the overall +29 goal differential for the team in teal.

Martin Jones (30-15-6 on the season in 52 GP) has stood tall in goal for the second straight year, notching 30 wins thus far (tied for 5th in the league with Boston’s Tuukka Rask). Jones’s .917 save percentage ranks 17th (tied with Florida’s Roberto Luongo) among active goalies with at least 25 games played this season, as his 2.28 goals against average is good enough to be tied for 9th in the league with Pittsburgh’s Matt Murray (same parameters as before, active goalies with at least 25 games played).

Minnesota enters Sunday with a 41-15-6 record through 62 games played (good enough for 88 points) and is 3-2-0 in their last five games, having outscored their opponents 19-17 during that time.

Wild head coach Bruce Boudreau has led his team within reach of the President’s Trophy as the team with the best record in the league at the end of the regular season, trailing one point behind the Blackhawks with three games in hand and seven points behind the Washington Capitals with two games in hand.

The State of Hockey’s leading scorer, center Mikael Granlund, ranks 12th in the league with 21-38-59 totals in 62 games played. Mikko Koivu (48 points), Nino Niederreiter (46 points) and Eric Staal (46 points) are also in the top-50 scorers in the league among active skaters.

Depth scoring has been a strong suit of an otherwise solely superstar-less driven scoring team as the Wild have racked up a +61 goal differential. Devan Dubnyk (34-12-3 on the season in 49 GP) ranks 1st in the league in save percentage with a .933 and 2nd in GAA with a 2.03 among active goalies with at least 25 games played this season. Dubnyk’s underrated play in net is sure to land him a Vezina Trophy this season.

The Sharks are 18-11-3 on the road, including their most recent 4-1 win in Vancouver against the Canucks on February 25th. Meanwhile, the Wild are 22-8-1 on home ice, including their 5-4 victory in overtime against the Los Angeles Kings on February 27th.

Minnesota topped San Jose in their previous meeting by a score of 5-4 on January 5th. The two teams will do battle once again on March 21st in what could be a season series tiebreaker.

Both teams are on a tear on offense in the last couple of weeks, however, Sunday night could be a different story with Dubnyk and Jones in net (so long as they’re the starters). Additionally, the Sharks have a slight edge in defense, having allowed one fewer goal than the Wild this season (147 goals against for SJ, compared to 148 GA for MIN).

I don’t know what the odds in Vegas are saying, but my money’s on San Jose pulling off a win with a slim margin of victory over Minnesota. The Wild beat the Sharks on road ice in January, so it’s only fair that San Jose wins one in Minnesota, right?

Hockey Birthday

Milt Schmidt (1918- January 4, 2017)– The Ultimate Bruin played all of his career (1936-1955) with Boston, coached in Boston (1954-1966) and was even the general manager (1967-1972) for the Bruins, winning two Stanley Cups as a player in 1939 and 1941, as well as two Stanley Cups as a GM in 1970 and 1972 for a total of four Cups in his life in hockey. Schmidt also coached the Washington Capitals in their first couple of seasons in existence (1974-1976), though they missed the playoffs both years.Hockey Birthday

Schmidt helped find Bobby Orr and pulled off the blockbuster trade of Pit Martin, Gilles Marotte and Jack Norris for Phil Esposito, Ken Hodge and Fred Stanfield from the Chicago Black Hawks as a general manager and took three years off from his playing career (in its prime!) from 1942-1945 to serve in World War II for the Royal Canadian Air Force alongside his Kraut Line teammates Woody Dumart and Bobby Bauer.

Sadly, the Kitchner, Ontario native passed away in January at 98-years-old as the last member of the inaugural (1936-1937) American Hockey League (AHL) season.

He passed on the reigns of the oldest living former NHL player to John “Chick” Webster, 96, who made his NHL debut in the 1949-1950 season with the New York Rangers, appearing in 14 games and racking up four penalty minutes in his short NHL career.

Saturday night’s DTFR Game of the Day matchup between the host New York Rangers and visiting Montreal Canadiens witnessed a 4-1 victory for the Habs on road ice as Montreal improved to 6-2-0 in the Claude Julien (Part Deux).

Carey Price made 26 saves on 27 shots faced en route to picking up the win at Madison Square Garden, while Henrik Lundqvist stopped 31 shots against on 35 shots faced in the loss.

Shea Weber opened the scoring for the Canadiens at 12:51 of the first period for his fifteenth goal of the season. Max Pacioretty (26) and Steve Ott (4) picked up assists on Weber’s goal. Montreal went into the first intermission with a 1-0 lead in what looked like it would be a goalie battle after all (as Colby wrote about yesterday), as Lundqvist made 10 saves on 11 shots faced and Price turned aside all six shots from the Rangers in the first period.

Despite trailing in shots on goal by five in the first period, New York only trailed in SOG 14-10 in the 2nd period and led in the category 11-10 in the 3rd period.

Artturi Lehkonen (12) scored what would become the game winning goal 8:48 into the 2nd period on a one-timer from one knee on a pass from Phillip Danault (21). Pacioretty (27) picked up the seconday assist.

The Canadiens went up 3-0 nearly ten minutes later in the 2nd period on a goal from Andrew Shaw (10). Shaw’s wraparound goal was assisted by Alex Galchenyuk (21) and Andrei Markov (24).

The lone goal from the Rangers came on a shot from Chris Kreider who notched his 24th goal of the season. Derek Stepan (32) and Mats Zuccarello (33) assisted on Kreider’s goal at 1:44 of the 3rd period. New York cut the lead to two goals, but could not muster enough to do anything further.

New addition to the lineup for Montreal, defenseman Jordie Benn fired home his 3rd goal of the season (and first as a Hab) at 6:58 of the 3rd period. Nathan Beaulieu (21) and Galchenyuk (22) assisted on Benn’s goal.

March 4 – Day 136 – Goalie Battle 101

It’s a takeover, with Connor Keith out of town the DTFR Game of the Day will be covered by the one and only Colby Kephart and boy are you all in for a huge let down if you usually read the Game of the Day.

So now that you all know this isn’t going to end well let’s get started. There are ten games on the schedule for tonight and there are some good ones highlighted by Columbus Blue Jackets vs Ottawa Senators, Chicago Blackhawks vs Nashville Predators and the Philadelphia Flyers vs Washington Capitals.

However, the game I have selected is the New York Rangers vs Montreal Canadiens at 7pm. The Rangers enter the night with a 41-21-2 record and are coming off a win against the Boston Bruins on Thursday night.

The Canadiens enter with an 36-21-8 record and are coming off a late game winner from Paul Byron on Thursday night vs the Predators.

Henrik Lundqvist had a tremendous night against the Bruins, only allowing one goal and having made a bunch of great saves. Lundqvist has a .913 save percentage and a 2.63 goals against average entering Saturday. He struggled in the month of February but his play has been great early in March.

This goalie battle is both ways as Canadiens goalie Carey Price is not scrub either. Price has struggled in the month of January and has since bounced back.

Like Lundqvist, he also only allowed one goal in an emotional night against former teammate P.K Subban. Entering today’s matchup against New York, Price has a .921 save percentage and a 2.34 goals against average.

Some key players to watch tonight for the Rangers would be Rick Nash– who has 18 goals and 14 assists for 32 points in 52 games– and Kevin Hayes. The better Hayes has 15 goals and 28 assists for 43 points in 59 games.

For the Canadiens, look no further than their captain Max Pacioretty who has 31 goals and 25 assists for 56 points in 65 games played. Pacioretty has had help from offseason addition Alexander Radulov. Radulov has 15 goals and 31 assists for 46 points in 63 games this season.

A good ole fashion goalie battle should bring a close game. In my first ever Game of the Day, I’m going with the New York Rangers thanks to a big performance by Lundqvist.

Tampa Bay flips Streit to Pittsburgh

Earlier on Wednesday, the Tampa Bay Lightning acquired defenseman Mark Streit from the Philadelphia Flyers. Lightning general manager Steve Yzerman then flipped Streit to the Pittsburgh Penguins prior to the 3 PM ET trade deadline later that day.

Pittsburgh sent a 2018 4th round pick in exchange for Streit from Tampa Bay. The Lightning retained 50% of Streit’s salary.

The 39-year-old defenseman can become an unrestricted free agent on July 1st.

He had 5-16-21 totals with in 49 games with the Flyers this season and is a native of Bern, Switzerland. The 5’11”, 191-pound blue liner has played 11 seasons in the league for the Montreal Canadiens, New York Islanders and Flyers, amassing 95 goals and 333 assists in his time for 428 points in his career.

Additionally, Streit has four goals and nine assists in 31 career Stanley Cup Playoff games.

He was originally drafted by Montreal in the ninth round (262nd overall) of the 2004 NHL Entry Draft.

TRADE: Predators add Parenteau

The Nashville Predators took part in Wednesday afternoon’s trade deadline action by trading a 2017 6th round pick to the New Jersey Devils in exchange for veteran forward P.A. Parenteau.

Parenteau, 33, was previously claimed on waivers by New Jersey from the New York Islanders in October and can become an unrestricted free agent on July 1st.

In 295 career NHL games with the Chicago Blackhawks, New York Rangers, New York Islanders, Colorado Avalanche, Montreal Canadiens, Toronto Maple Leafs and Devils, Parenteau has tallied 114 goals and 67 assists (181 points).

Through 59 games this season, he had 13-14-27 totals with New Jersey. Parenteau was originally drafted by the Anaheim Ducks in the ninth round (264th overall) of the 2001 NHL Entry Draft.

New Jersey’s newly acquired 6th round pick in the 2017 draft is exactly that. No terms or conditions apply.

TRADE: Habs and Avs swap Andrighetto and Martinsen

Wednesday was a busy day for Joe Sakic and the Colorado Avalanche as the Avs GM was dealing left and right, though not in the sense many had expected.

The Avalanche traded young forward Andreas Martinsen to the Montreal Canadiens in exchange for forward Sven Andrighetto.

Andrighetto, 23, had 2-6-8 totals in 27 games played for Montreal this season and was the Canadiens 86th overall pick in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft. In 83 career games, he has amassed 11 goals and 17 assists.

He played two seasons for the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies in the QMJHL prior to being drafted and is a native of Zurich, Switzerland. Andrighetto is a pending restricted free agent this July.

Martinsen, 26, had three goals and four assists for Colorado in 55 games this season. A native of Norway, Martinsen has played in 110 NHL games with 7-11-18 career totals. He is a pending unrestricted free agent in July.

TRADE: Dwight King traded to Montreal

The Montreal Canadiens acquired forward Dwight King from the Los Angeles Kings on Wednesday in exchange for a conditional 4th round pick in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft. King is a pending unrestricted free agent this July.

If King re-signs with Montreal, then the 4th round pick in 2018 becomes a 3rd round pick in 2018.

The 27-year-old left wing skated in 63 games with Los Angeles this season, amassing 8-7-15 totals and 96 hits. In 348 career NHL games, King has 52 goals and 56 assists (108 points). He is a two-time Stanley Cup champion, having won with the Kings in 2012 and 2014.

King played Junior hockey with the WHL’s Lethbridge Hurricanes and is a native of Meadow Lake, Saskatchewan.

Los Angeles originally selected King in the fourth round, 109th overall, in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft.

TRADE: Florida Panthers acquire Thomas Vanek

The Florida Panthers made a splash late Wednesday morning in a deal with the Detroit Red Wings.

Florida acquired 33-year-old forward Thomas Vanek in exchange for defenseman Dylan McIlrath and a conditional 2017 3rd round pick. The Red Wings retained 50% of Vanek’s salary as part of the deal.

If the Panthers make the playoffs, Detroit receives Arizona’s 3rd round pick in the 2017 draft. Florida owns both their own 3rd round pick in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft and the Coyotes’s 3rd round pick in the draft.

Vanek has 331-356-687 totals in 865 career NHL games played with the Buffalo Sabres, New York Islanders, Montreal Canadiens, Minnesota Wild and Red Wings. In 48 games this season with Detroit, Vanek had 15 goals and 23 assists.

The left winger was the fifth overall selection at the 2003 NHL Entry Draft by Buffalo and is a pending unrestricted free agent in July.

McIlrath appeared in six games this season between the New York Rangers and Panthers. In 43 career NHL games, the 24-year-old defenseman has 3-2-5 totals and 94 PIM.

He played in a career high 34 games for the Rangers in 2015-2016 and was traded in November to Florida for D Steven Kampfer and a conditional 7th round pick in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft.

The New York Rangers originally selected McIlrath 10th overall at the 2010 NHL Entry Draft. He is a pending restricted free agent this July and carries a cap hit of $800,000.

While You Were Sleeping

While most East Coasters had probably gone off to bed four GMs were wide awake (in part because some of their games were still going on).

The San Jose Sharks opening trading on the March 1st trade deadline and acquired veteran forward Jannik Hansen, from the Vancouver Canucks in exchange for 21-year-old forward Nikolay Goldobin and a conditional 4th round pick in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft.

Hansen was a healthy scratch Tuesday night as the Canucks faced the Detroit Red Wings on home ice. He had 6-7-13 totals in 28 games for Vancouver this season in an abbreviated stint due to a knee injury. Hansen has one year remaining on his contract and is a pending unrestricted free agent this July.

The 30-year-old forward had 235 points (105 goals, 130 assists) in 565 career NHL games with Vancouver.

Goldobin was the 27th overall pick in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft by San Jose and played in two games this season with the Sharks. Since the 2014 draft, Goldobin has appeared in 11 career NHL games for San Jose, amassing 1-1-2 totals.

In 46 games with San Jose’s AHL affiliate, the San Jose Barracuda, Goldobin had 15-26-41 totals this season.

In the second transaction announced shortly after midnight on the East Coast, the Montreal Canadiens acquired 34-year-old forward Steve Ott from the Detroit Red Wings in exchange for a 6th round pick in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft.

Ott signed a one-year contract, worth $800,000, on July 1st with Detroit and had six goals and three assists in 43 games with the Red Wings this season. In 837 career NHL games with the Dallas Stars, Buffalo Sabres, St. Louis Blues and Red Wings, Ott has 109-178-287 totals.

In 55 Stanley Cup Playoff games, Ott has eight points (three goals and five assists). He is a pending unrestricted free agent this summer.

Vegas Golden Knights

Sick Hand of the Month-Toews’ Monster Month Doesn’t Steal From Burns’ 5th Appearance on SHotM

Hey, everyone, I’m back this week for the second Sick Hands of The Month! If you forgot what that was, here is a quick reminder: So what I’m basically going to do is pick a player from each position on the ice (Left Wing, Center, Right Wing, two defenders, and a goalie). Then it’s basically the same thing as the normal “SHS” where I recap why I picked them and highlight their best games, goals, assists, etc. This Sick Hands of the Month is going to range from the last time I put one out (1/25-2/25). (A quick side note, sorry I’m a week late getting this out, I got all caught up being sick last week and it’s been a mess and I haven’t found time to write it out but here I go!)

Jonathan Toews – Center (CHI) The reason why I picked this big broad lad out of Winnipeg, Canada was because this guy was on fire this past month! When I mean fire like he couldn’t be stopped and for a good reason too. Toews recorded a total of 16 points in just a span of 11 games this past month and those 16 points were made up of 6 goals and 10 assists. He also had a total of five power play points with two of them being goals over this past calendar month as well as two game-winning goals and an overtime goal. Also, Toews has torn it up in his past five games registering a total of ELEVEN points in that span, consisting of five goals and six assists. He also had a five-point night made up of a hat trick and two assists in a game against Minnesota on February 21st. So you can clearly tell that Captian Serious as they like to call him up in Chicago is coming into form down the stretch and killing the game.

Jamie Benn – Left Wing (DAL) I picked this STAR-studded player (see what I did there?) It’s okay I’ll let myself out now that was a terrible pun but I had to write it in. But I picked Benn because like Toews he himself had a killer month and it was fantastic to watch because I love watching Benn and he killed it. Been tallied the same number of points as Toews did this past month at 16 total in 12 games, but Benn did it differently as his 16 was made up of nine goals and seven assists. Benn also had a total of seven points on the manpower advantage with three of them turning into goals. He also followed in Toews footsteps and tallied two game-winning goals and one overtime goal as well. In Benn’s last five games he hasn’t been as on fire, but still pretty good at six points made up of three goals and three assists apiece. So as Benn and the Stars start to heat up look for them down to make a push to a playoff spot.

Patrik Laine – Right Wing (WPG) First off, this rookie is just been sensational to watch play, I mean every time I get a chance to watch him play my eyes are glued to the TV. Every time I see a highlight, my eyes are glued to my phone, he is a freak athlete and great for just a rookie. But enough of praising him let’s get to his stats shall we? In this past month Laine took a page out of Benn’s and Toews book and decided to tally 16 points as well and he also did it in just 12 games like Benn. Another funny thing is that he, like Benn, registered nine goals and seven assists to make up his total points. Although his other stats were down, he only tallied one power play point which was a goal and one game-winning goal. But his last five games are where he caught fire, and I mean burnt up! Laine recorded 10 points in his last five games which were made up of seven goals and three assists! So he is in the same boat as Benn is, if Laine continues to play like this and the rookie can rally the troops around his play, the Jets can make a push for the playoffs once again.

Brent Burns – Defense (SJS) DEAR LORD, would you look who it is, it’s Brent Burns! I need to ask my readers a question, are you really astonished that he’s on here again, or should we just start getting used to seeing his name? Don’t worry, I’ll wait for an answer….the answer is probably an astounding NO we aren’t surprised. Because that has been my answer for a while now. But yes, Mr. Burns appears on Sick Hands of the Month for the FIFTH month in a row because he was on yet another rampage during this month of hockey. Burns finished this month tied for the lead in points by D-men with 13 points in 11 games that were made up by six goals and seven points. He also had four power play points where one of them became a goal as well as one overtime goal. In Burns’ last five games he tallied eight points in that span which came from five goals and three assists. The Sharks are loving this play from Burns as I am sure everyone one is and if he keeps playing like this I am just going to pencil his name in every month.

Erik Karlsson – Defense (OTT) Hey look who it is, we’ve seen Mr. Karlsson here a couple times before and I am honestly not surprised he’s here again. These two guys are the best two offensive defenders in the league and it shows it. Karlsson had another great month and was tied with Burns in points for the month with 13 points in 13 games made up of only three goals but a whopping 10 assists! Karlsson also copied Burns this month and finished with four power play tallied and one of them turning out to be a geno as well as one game-winning goal! In Karlsson’s last five games, he recorded six points in that span made up of two goals and four assists. The Senators are in a heated race with the Canadiens for first place in the Atlantic and are only separated by four points at the moment. So if Karlsson keeps up his play, we could see a turnaround!

Braden Holtby – Goalie (WSH) The reason why I picked this star goaltender is simply easy. He was the best goalie this month by far and I will tell you just that and a little more. In the last month, Holtby has started and played in nine games and gone 8-0-1 in those games with an impressive .923 save percentage and a solid 1.99 goals against average. He also stopped a total of 216 shots out of 234 in the month and only gave up 18 total goals in that span which was the least amount given up for all goalie in the past month. In Holtby’s past five games he has gone 4-0-1 with one of them being an overtime loss. In his past three games, he’s faced 23 shots or more and hasn’t given up more than two goals in the process. If the Capitals are looking to make a deep run this year, I think it will happen if Holtby keeps up this great play.
